Stony Brook Software Incubator Guidelines

Consistent with the January 22, 1986 SUNY "Policy and Guidelines for the Use of State University Facilities by Emerging Technology Enterprises", the State University of New York at Stony Brook will apply the following criteria in the selection of tenants for its Software Incubator:
  1. The nature of the business of the applicant is the development of computer software.
  2. The technology is new or a new application of existing technology.
  3. The applicant will develop, use or produce products that could benefit from campus academic programs or research activities of faculty, staff and students and could stimulate employment opportunities for students and consulting and collaborative research activities with faculty.
  4. A business plan developed by the applicant shall demonstrate the potential for the applicant's success as an Incubator tenant (relocation to non-University facilities anticipated within eighteen months) and shall include, at a minimum, sufficient basis for the following findings.
    • the business experience and educational background of the principles of the organization support a reasonable expectation that the development of the product or business is feasible;
    • the needs identified by the applicant can be realistically met by participation as an Incubator tenant; and
    • the organization's projections of future revenue and employee growth are realistic.
  5. The applicant offers evidence of the potential contribution to the economic development of the region.
  6. The applicant demonstrates the capacity to fulfill all user fee obligations and/or the willingness to provide other forms of compensation in exchange for the use of campus facilities and services.
